Introducing Freelancing For Good – a new community for freelancers who believe in using their skills to make a positive impact.
We believe that, as freelancers, we have a unique opportunity to align our business goals with our personal values and make a difference in the world. But we also understand that each of us has different resources available and, therefore, the way to do the most good is different for each of us as well.
Relying on the values and ideas of Effective Altruism, we have created Freelancing For Good with a mission to inspire freelancers to make a positive change and discover how they can use their available resources to do the most good they can.
Learning and applying the values and principles of Effective Altruism
We can all do good things very easily – just a quick Google search will give you an overwhelming number of causes and charities to donate to. But the question we need to answer is how we do the most good we can with the time and resources we have available – and that’s where the effective altruism comes in.
Effective altruism (EA) is a “research field and practical community that aims to find the best ways to help others, and put them into practice”. The reason we started learning about effective altruism in the first place was that we wanted to make sure that our efforts to do good are worth it and will actually have a visible impact.
We know many freelancers want to do good, but with so many pressing issues and causes, it can be hard to know where to focus our efforts and make a difference. We also noticed many freelancers have not even heard about effective altruism, so we set on a mission to change that.
Our goal with Freelancing For Good is to bring EA movement closer to freelancers, inspire and encourage them to make a meaningful impact and build a community of like-minded individuals who share their vision.
Whether it’s through donating a portion of the income, working on projects for non-profits or simply sharing the ideas of effective altruism with others, we believe every action in the right direction, no matter how big or small, can lead to a big positive change.
How to start freelancing for good
As the very first step, we recommend requesting a free copy of Alistair’s new ebook: Freelancing With Purpose. The ebook chronicles his personal journey of discovering how to use his career for good, his decision to pledge 10% of his income to highly effective charities, and offers guidance on how freelancers can bring purpose to their businesses without making any significant changes.
